HEARTLAND was a one of five finalists out of nearly a thousand entries in the 2010 Young Adult Novel Discovery Contest sponsored by the Gotham Writers Workshop.

Sixteen-year-old TOM ALLEN’s life is imploding. His father banished Tom from his life; Tom’s stepfather is entirely too interested in commenting on Tom’s behavior. What makes it worse is that his stepfather’s comments are usually right on target. Then Tom’s beloved grandma suffers a stroke, which leaves his mother emotionally distant. Meanwhile his older sister is too sophisticated to worry about his concerns.

When Tom reads an old family memoir from his grandma’s cedar chest he becomes intrigued by his ancestors’ accounts of their struggle to form one unified family from two shattered families. They face man-made and natural dangers while they battle to survive smoldering conflicts in “Bleeding Kansas” that will soon erupt into the bloodiest war in American history — the Civil War. With the help of family and friends, past and present, Tom gradually comes to terms with the pain and possibilities of his own family.

This book was a good mixture of past and modern times that kept my interest throughout. I learned new things, and I always like that. It should appeal to young readers.

Heartland eBook Warren Bull Michael Patterson Reviews

Even adolescent boys who don't like to read will enjoy the dangers and excitement of this time in pre-Civil War Kansas. This grabs you from the opening paragraph and never lets up. I give it my highest recommendation.
Warren Bull's YA novel, Heartland, has a foot in each of two worlds. The modern world where Tom, sixteen, tries to come to grips with a father who doesn't care about him any longer, a stepfather who cares too much what Tom does, and a beloved grandmother who's been hospitalized with a stroke, melds through a set of old family letters with the world of his teenage ancestors in "Bleeding Kansas," torn by violence in the lead-up to the Civil War. Bull's history is well-researched and well-presented with clarity and style, and his settings, past and present, are realistically rendered, but what makes this book a real standout is his ability to bring to life his teenage characters in both the nineteenth and the twenty-first centuries. He has a genuine feel for the thoughts and conversation of teens in both time periods. Though marketed as a YA novel, this book can be enjoyed by adults with a taste for the historical, as well.
This is a delightfully entertaining yet, inspiring novella. Warren Bull is a talented writer/story teller.

The YA adults will love this light story of a youth, Tom, trying to adjust to his parents divorce and a new step parent.

His grandmother was hospitalized so gifted him with keys to a very special hidden treasure... One that will help him see life differently and discover what real treasures lies within.

He shares this adventure with his best friend, Pat, who soon is caught up into the adventures they experience.

The Title and Cover does not do justice to the story. They do not depict the subject matter fittingly, although both do have an element of portrayal. However, this will not detract from the rating.

There was never a time the story dragged. It was fast-moving and fluctuated between events expertly.

The characters were developed well and the background scenes described well.

This is definitely worthy of the Five Stars rating my review gives to this book.

This book was sent to me by the author for an honest review and rating, of which I have given.
Very well written book! The young protagonist learns how to cope with the challenges of his modern-day blended family by reading his ancestors' diaries and empathizing with their struggles. A real page turner.
This book was a good mixture of past and modern times that kept my interest throughout. I learned new things, and I always like that. It should appeal to young readers.
