First Command Kelly Blake Series Book 2 eBook Rodney Smith
This is an enjoyable space opera series with lots of derring-do. This is the second book in the Kelly Blake Series. So far books in the Kelly Blake series are standalone novels although they build upon each other. It is really nice to read a series where each novel is complete. I would not recommend reading books out of order. Kelly Blake continues his service in the Galactic Republic's Scout Force which is responsible for monitoring the border with the aggressive K'Rang Empire. Second novel also throws pirates into the mix. Although intelligence gathering and scouting are still a major theme, second novel has significantly more space battles. For space opera fans, this is a good one and I recommend reading it. Classic space opera plot line with humans defending against the alien menace with pirate action thrown in on the side. Space battles really pick up in the second book but intelligence gathering and scouting remain a strong theme. Science Fiction is light as no effort is made to justify FTL, space battle physics, real time long range sensors and technology advances. Action and intrigue are very captivating to make this a good overall space opera read. Kelly is still chased by every pretty girl in the story but it is not as heavy handed as it was in the first story, Scout Force.
First Command is 6,443 Kindle locations long. Standard length novels seem to run in the 4,500 to 7,000 plus Kindle location range. Books in Jack Campbell's first Lost Fleet series were approximately 5,000 Kindle locations.

First Command Kelly Blake Series Book 2 eBook Rodney Smith Reviews
First Command shows considerable improvement over the first novel in the Kelly Blake Series. Clearly the author found a editor to match his awesome proofreader as there are less of the "it don't quite hang right" errors than in the first novel. The lack of grammatical errors is a good sign for the series and while the long term ending of the series is fairly evident to avid readers of sci-fi, how the author gets there should prove quite interesting.
Unlike in the previous book people directly die in this one forcing development out of some characters while others seem to have it already in hand. It would be good to see Kelly himself develop, but I'll take what I can get. Other than Kelly having an insane amount of connections, a classic of a sci-fi series, and some how getting numerous women to throw themselves at him despite not being very attractive, the lead character is fairly well rounded and likable. There are a couple of scenes in the book that could use some refinement and going over by the authors' proofreader.
Some of the science in the book could use some work or further development as a background element to the series, travel seems to happen too fast for the scale of the book, but that would be integral to a easy sci-fi story. Also, the main setting, a star cluster, is mentioned several times as near uninhabitable, but has at least one habitable planet within it. I'd like to see a reasonably, perhaps cheesy, explanation of this as it should have been given within this book, but was not.
The biggest bone I have is that the ranking system of the various military forces is never fully explained. The Fighter Force seems to have inherited the USAF ranks and perhaps some USN and USMC traditions. While the Marines and Fleet elements have kept their own ranking system the relationship is not quite clear. And Scout Force seems to behave like the submarine forces in the USN, but has equally awkward rank structure. Also the author has a tendency to use standard US military abbreviation for ranks when he should know better. In a dialogue someone would say commander, not CMDR or whatever the abbreviation is, this is acceptable when drafting but should have been fixed by someone, proofreader, editor, or author before the book went to press. It gets annoying to see a abbreviation in a spoken line, time after time. Messages and descriptions are fine, but not in dialogue please.
Overall, its never going to be a classic, but it is a good, entertaining read for a rainy afternoon or three, and it doesn't take a lot of focus or knowledge to read. 14 and up would be a good target audience.
According to an admiral under which he served, Kelly Blake is "smart, capable, intuitive, and deadly." He also has 4 incredibly beautiful, capable and intuitive women who adore him but aren't jealous of each other. Did I mention that he can do no wrong, never gets trapped or hurt, gets promoted every 6 months and wins in spite of incredibly long odds? Sounds like a Marty Stu. But somehow, Smith pulls it off and deliveres an exciting and fun read. He is able to create suspense out of success tropes (which isn't easy) and I found myself caught up in the story and stayed up far too late to finish it. Highly Recommended.
I have read three of the Kelly Blake series.. Starting with Scout Force, then First Command, then Where The Stars Are Few And Far Between. Kelly comes to the Scout Force as Ensign with a bad Rep. and not a team player!! On his Scout Ship, He learns teamwork and His Capt. and Crew learn some Fighter Ship moves. Spread across several Star Systems they top their foes. In First Command, Kelly and Crew contain the K'Rangs and also Pirates. Kelly gets another Promotion. In Where The Stars Are Few And Far Between, Kelly returns from Earth and takes Command of a new type Scout Ship and goes to meet a new Peoples and convince them to help contain and finally beat the K'Rang People. Having read these in the space of two weeks, My Daughter and I are waiting for the next adventure of Kelly and his Friends!!
All right, I'm hooked on the Kelly Blake series. I give both books 5 stars.
The author writes a great yarn that moves along and has plenty of action. I'll read a good, fast paced tale like this of any genre, even romance. I read both books twice. The first read, I kept reading faster & faster to find out what was going to happen next. My next read was slower, more detailed and more enjoyable. Put me down for the next in the series.
I like the characters in the story. I could see a few books for background fill-in, like on the past of CMDR Timmons. Maybe a background book on Kelly up through his academy days. How about the first war with the K'Rang? What about how the K'Rang developed? Maybe a full account of Kelly's time in Fighter Command. I want more, more, MORE in this series.
Sure the rank structure of the various services, branches or whatever are not completely like the US military, but this is the author's world. You take it the way he wrote and get on with the story. It's a good one.
